Gardening supplies in Canada - statistics & facts
Seasonal sales
Quarterly sales of hardware, lawn, and garden products in Canada peak in the second quarter each year when the main growing season kicks off around the country. To prepare for such sales, garden centers across the country need to increase their stocks. For example, the production volume of potted plants reached 250.61 million plants in 2024, while the number of outdoor hanging pots reached 11.23 million plants in the same year. Among garden nursery trees, by far small fruit bushes were the most popular in 2024, production reaching 34.8 million bushes that year.Retail
Home Depot is one of the most popular home and garden retailers in North America. The American DIY chain had 182 stores across Canada in 2024. Taking into consideration nursery stores and garden centers, the province of Ontario had the highest number of garden supply stores as of June 2024 with 425, followed by British Columbia with 211. The majority of flower and plant sales in the same year were through mass market chain stores, with sales from domestic wholesalers taking second place. It appears that Canadians also enjoy growing their own food at home, with sales of fruit and vegetable horticulture products steadily growing each year to reach around 2.7 billion Canadian dollars in 2024.As figures show growing tendencies in the United States, the global lawn and garden market is expected to experience similar increase, predicted to reach over 400 billion U.S. dollars by 2029.
