Other fruit beverages that are made with fruit concentrate can also fall under this category. Fruit juices are often consumed for their perceived nutritional benefits. For instance, orange juice has a perceived nutritional value because it contains vitamin C, folic acid and potassium. However, fruit juices and fruit nectars can also contain added sugar and food additives used to prolong shelf-life for example. The EU Fruit Juice Directive details regulations on the composition and quality standards of fruit juices and fruit nectars that can be introduced and marketed on the EU market, in addition to strict labelling regulations for various health claims in fruit juice products.
The revenue of the market
In 2022, the
fruit juice market in Europe generated sales of around 38.5 billion euros, which corresponds to a
per capita revenue of approximately 32.8 euros. According to Statista Market Insights, the juice segment of the soft drinks market is expected to grow to almost 38 billion euros by 2026. A closer look at the
segments shows that orange juice sells best in Europe. This segment generated with nearly nine billion euros the highest revenue.
Consumption in Germany
In 2021, 16.3 liters of
juice and nectar were consumed per person in the EU. But what did it look like in Germany? The country is one of the largest European markets and therefore very interesting. The
annual average per capita consumption of fruit juice drinks in Germany decreased overall from 2012 to 2022. That year, the average German consumed almost ten liters of such beverages.
Orange juice was also the most popular here. Of the ten liters of juice, around seven liters of orange juice were drunk.
