Alcoholic beverages market in Japan - statistics & facts
The multi-brand strategy in Japan’s alcoholic beverage industry
Large holding companies established a century ago have dominated alcoholic beverage manufacturing in Japan. Asahi Group Holdings, Kirin Holdings Company, Sapporo Holdings, and Suntory Holdings have expanded their brand portfolios vertically to include other food and beverage segments since their founding, which has anchored their positions in the domestic food manufacturing industry. While the four brewers have become undisputed in the beer segment, smaller ventures and family businesses in other segments have limited their portfolios to core products and focused on establishing their signature flavor profiles. Distilleries in shochu manufacturing and sake brewers have successfully defended their positions against new market entrants. The wine market, however, is more fragmented, with imported brands joining the competition.
Is the Japanese drinking culture on a decline?
Even though nomikai has become commonplace in Japanese social and business lives, frequent alcohol consumption is not necessarily a common habit. Trends in production and sales have been showing a gradual decline, particularly among strong liquors. A shift towards a health-conscious lifestyle among young adults and stricter penalties for driving under the influence have been affecting the industry. Moreover, the return to activities outside the home is working in favor of beer and mixed drinks with lower alcohol content. The aforementioned four major breweries have followed suit by pulling their stronger products from store shelves. This trend has also impacted other segments like sake, which commonly reaches 15 percent alcohol by volume as a diluted product. In response, sake brewers have started to look towards whisky distillation during off-seasons to offset their losses in the domestic market amid a rising popularity of Japanese whisky in key export markets. As the Japanese population is on a continuous decline and drinking habits have been changing, alcoholic drink manufacturers will have to innovate their product portfolio and explore new market opportunities overseas to stay afloat.
