Heritage luxury in the UK - statistics and facts

British luxury brands with a long-standing heritage and a strong emphasis on craftsmanship occupy a distinctive place in the minds of luxury consumers and the broader luxury goods industry. Names like Burberry, Barbour, Hunter, and Asprey evoke quintessential images of Britishness in their timeless and understated styles that are often steeped in tradition.

The quiet luxury to heritage spectrum

In recent years, several trends have emerged in the luxury space, the latest being quiet luxury, exemplified by Loro Piana’s understated, logo-free designs and timeless silhouettes. If quiet luxury signifies an ‘old money’ aesthetic, where luxury goods are subtle, exclusive and intentionally out of reach, heritage luxury stands as its equally powerful counterpart: rooted in legacy and craftsmanship, yet offered at more accessible price points, making quality available to a broader audience.

Leading brands

Some of the leading names in British heritage luxury sit between the premium and high-end segments. Burberry, established in 1856 and instantly recognizable by its iconic tartan, remains perhaps the most prominent brand carrying the British heritage flag. Another representative is Barbour, known for its waxed jackets and classic country style, worn by everyone from the British royals to Glastonbury festival-goers. Over the past 5 years, the company improved its revenue figures, going from 202 million British pounds to over 320 million British pounds in annual sales. Not all brands associated with classic British heritage style are thriving though. Hunter Boots, a staple of countryside fashion, is one such example. The Edinburgh-based company entered administration in 2023 after years of mounting debt and declining sales.

Made in Britain

Local craftsmanship is key to heritage luxury. Barbour, for instance, still produces its classic Beaufort jackets in their manufacturing factory in the North East of England. Although not all production takes place locally and not all heritage fashion pieces are British-made, there is a growing industry effort to promote the Made in Britain trademark among consumers and encourage domestic manufacturing and support local businesses. In the fashion and clothing industry, there are currently around 220 brands that are British-made. These companies were evenly spread across men’s and women’s lines. As for consumers, the recognition of the Made in Britain trademark and interest in local production is also growing. In 2024, 56 percent of consumers knew about the Made in Britain brand. This rate was slightly lower in the preceding year.
